Forestburg

Something very exciting happened on Friday night of this year’s Sanborn County Achievement Days last weekend. At around 5:30 p.m., a highly anticipated groundbreaking ceremony took place for construction to start on the new addition to the current 4-H building in Forestburg. The new addition is going to be attached to the north side of the existing building and will double the size of the facility.

With a hefty $430,000 price tag for the addition, the building committee made up of Paula Linke, Riley Zoss-Littau, Myron Sonne, Scott Senska, Andy Ettswold, Art and Audrey Kneen and Rod Weber have been raising funds for over four years to get this project accomplished, and the time has finally come to see their diligent work pay off. The initial goal was $300,000, then $350,000, and they are now working on $430,000, as they have dealt with an increase in costs since the COVID epidemic. They are currently at just over $360,000 raised after they received a nice donation of $5,000 from the family of Omer and Lucile Fouberg on July 31.

Some area 4-H members competed at the Sioux Falls Area 4-H Regional Rodeo this past weekend at the WH Lyons Fairgrounds. Landree Zoss of Forestburg competed in the goat tying event and brought home the championship buckle with a time of 10.4 seconds, which qualified her for the State 4-H Rodeo Finals in August.

Ramsey Fouberg of Letcher was entered in junior girls’ barrels, pole bending, break away roping, goat tying and flag race. She ended the competition on Saturday tied in points for All-Around Champion for junior girls with her first-place finish in flag race and second-place time of 10.6 seconds in goat tying. On Sunday, she won the flag race again and earned third place in goat tying. Fouberg is now qualified for state in flags, pole bending and goat tying.

Layton Zoss, Forestburg, competed in the senior bullriding and earned a second-place finish, which also qualified him for the State 4-H Rodeo Finals.

Tierney Breen of Woonsocket competed in the senior girls’ goat tying and finished as the champion in the event with the fastest run of the weekend, which qualified her for state in August also.

Hudson Fouberg also competed in senior girls’ breakaway roping and goat tying, and Lawson Zoss competed in junior boys’ flag race and cattle riding, but neither placed in the top four of their events to qualify for state, yet. There will be more opportunities for them later this season.

The Zoss kids are the children of Christy and Charlie Zoss of rural Forestburg, and the Fouberg girls are the daughters of Jen and Denny Fouberg of rural Letcher. Breen is the daughter of Lacy Eaton of rural Woonsocket.

On Friday, May 19, the Artesian Fire Department was called to the Richard and Louise Alt residence to fight a fire consuming the Alts’ barn. Once they got to the location, they contacted the Town and Country Fire District of Woonsocket to come and help fight the blaze. It took the fire fighters about three hours to work on extinguishing the flames, and once they were done, the barn was a total loss, and the east side of the Alts’ home was heavily damaged on the outside. In addition to the damage to the two buildings, there were three classic cars and many personal belongings that were all in the barn and lost in the fire. The cause of the fire has not been determined, and there were no injuries reported.
