Woonsocket

On Saturday, March 9, the Town & Country Fire Department along with members from the Redfield Fire Department, performed an acquired structure burn training. The goal of the day was to develop tactics relevant to small rural fire departments. Transitional fire attack is a type of firefighting tactic widely used across Europe. In the morning, the group watched a training video from a Swedish fire instructor and discussed how and when to use the technique. Afterwards, the knowledge was used on a real fire, and members were able to experience firsthand the pros and cons. By learning new tactics and modifying them to meet their needs, it gives the department more options on the job. The house that was used for the training was donated by the owners for fire department use and was located in Woonsocket’s city limits.

On Tuesday, March 12, the Town & Country Fire Department responded to a small fire in a tree belt east of Woonsocket. The Alpena Fire Department was initially called for mutual aid because of a report of vehicles on fire, but they were turned around before they arrived. This was the second fire in as many days. Officials are preparing for a busy grass fire season and urge everyone to use caution with the dry conditions.

Woonsocket volunteers build beds for Sleep in Heavenly Peace

By Randy Northrup, Santel Sales and Marketing Manager

It was a beautiful, sunny and 70-degree day in Woonsocket for the Sleep in Heavenly Peace bed build to provide beds for children in need.

This community bed build event was made possible by the arrival of the Woonsocket CTE class and their instructor, Darin Schmiedt, the Santel and Tech Solutions staff and the SHP crew. Santel Communications sponsored the costs of the bed build and the event, which started with a lunch served at about 11:30 a.m., followed by photos taken, instruction from SHP,  a prayer and then the bed build at 12:30 p.m. By about 3:30 p.m., they were putting the SHP brand on the 21 beds that were produced. They were also able to prep another dozen for future completion.

Barbara Lorenz, SD-Huron Chapter President along with her husband, the delivery and construction coordinator, organized the crew to make a difference in children’s lives by providing beds for those who do not have a bed to sleep in. If you have anyone from 7 to 17 that does not have a bed to sleep in, you can go to https://shpbeds.org/apply/.

Woonsocket senior Kenna Ochsner, right, is pictured here with her cousin Briley Viktora, a sophomore at WHS, who gave blood for the first time to help Ochsner meet her goal for the blood drive she hosted as her senior project.

While fulfilling her senior project requirement, Woonsocket senior Kenna Ochsner also learned the rewarding feeling that goes into helping others while she hosted a successful blood drive in Woonsocket on Thursday, Feb. 8.

In the few weeks leading up to the actual date of the drive, Ochsner reached out to high school students at WHS to see if any of those who are 16 or older would be willing to donate, and she signed up several new donors. She then contacted friends and family outside of the school to see if any of them would be willing to donate, and again, got a great response and signed up some new donors as well as some returnees. Ochsner then turned to her mentor for the project, Mrs. Carrie Howard, for help in contacting donors from the list provided by Vitalant, the company the blood drive was coordinated through.
