BETTY ANDERSON

Mitchell

Betty (Latza) Anderson, of Mitchell, formerly of Baltic, passed away Friday, April 12, 2024. Visitation was from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 16, 2024, at West Nidaros Lutheran Church, rural Crooks, with a prayer service beginning at 7 p.m. Funeral services began at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Interment followed at the Butler Cemetery, rural Letcher. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Betty’s honor to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Betty was born to Anton and Anna Latza on July 28, 1941, in Mitchell, S.D. She graduated from Letcher High School in 1959 and from South Dakota State University in 1963. In 1993, Betty earned a master’s degree in Library Science from Mankato State University. While at SDSU she met James Anderson. They were married June 23, 1963, and are so grateful to have over 60 years of marriage.

Betty’s greatest joy came from her children and grandchildren. Watching them enjoy her wonderful cooking and famous pies delighted her. She spent her career in education, retiring from Tri-Valley School District as Head Librarian. She and Jim lived on their farm west of Baltic for 46 years and then moved to Mitchell in July of 2022. Betty was very involved at West Nidaros Lutheran Church, in multiple roles, and had gained a new church family of friends at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Following SDSU Jackrabbit events brought her great entertainment.

Betty is survived by her husband, Jim; daughter, Lori Anderson (Chris Croghan) of Sioux Falls, S.D., and their children, Jacob and Sara; daughter, Amy (Troy) Olson of Artesian, S.D., and their children, Kayla (Tanner) VanWinkle and Trevor (Tristan) Olson; sister-in-law, Carol Latza of Woonsocket; and Jim’s siblings, June (Floyd) Wiesner, Brookings, and Jackie Fuehrer, Brookings.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; her brothers, Eugene and Albert (Mildred); Jim’s parents, Merle and Evelyn Anderson; Jim’s sister, Joan (Don) Bixby; and Jim’s brother-in-law, Clyde Fuehrer.

William Joseph “Billy Joe” Eining Jr., 73, of Huron, passed away on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at Huron Regional Medical Center after his short battle with cancer. 

His Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, April 9, at Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, with burial at St. Paul’s Catholic Cemetery in Iroquois. Visitation was Monday, April 8, at Welter Funeral Home in Huron and one hour prior to the service at the church. 

Billy Joe was born in Huron, on Dec. 31, 1950, to Bill and Mary (Marsh) Eining and grew up in Iroquois, where he graduated in 1969. Billy Joe served four years in the De Smet National Guard and attended Dakota State University for one year. He was a member of the Catholic faith.

Billy Joe married Deanna Kelley on Dec. 18, 1971, in Iroquois, and had two children, Billy and Sherry. He married Janice Meyer on Aug. 23, 1989, in Huron, and had two children, Nikki and John.

Billy Joe enjoyed golfing, card-playing, and giving unwarranted advice to anyone within earshot. Billy Joe loved cooking and spending time with his family. Billy Joe enjoyed his Plains coffee club, his Sportsman’s card-playing crew, and the Country Club golf leaguers. 

Billy Joe had many professions, from working as a butcher, a salesman, a card dealer, a food, bar, and hotel manager, a realtor, and a restaurant owner.

Billy Joe is survived by his wife, Janice of Huron; his four children, William (Dawn) Eining III of Huron, Sherry Eining of Huron, Nikki (Eric) Kannegieter of Brookings, and John (Lindsay Bales) Eining of Eden Prairie, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; his siblings, Sandi (Marlen) Winter of St. Lawrence, Sharon (Bruce Heitman) Eining of Sioux Falls, Traci (Bryan) Flanigan of Urbandale, Iowa, Steve Eining of Brookings, Joe Eining of Dell Rapids, Keith (Jodie) Eining of Dell Rapids, and Lori (Jamie) Reetz of Webster; sister-in-law, Becky Eining of Sommerset; sister-in-law, Patricia (Don) Wenzel of Wessington Springs; brother-in-law, Mark (Sandy) Meyer of Woonsocket; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.  

Billy Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Mary; his parents-in-law, LeRoy and Marie Meyer; grandparents, Ed and Alice Eining, Neil Francis, Hazel and Laurena Marsh; brothers, Kim and Greg Eining; in-laws, Muriel (Albert) Schmidt, Jackie (Robert) Hinker, Vicki Harris and Jeanie Sandness; and nephews and nieces.

Delores Peterson

Alexandria

Delores “Dee” Margaret Peterson, 80, of Alexandria, passed away on Thursday, March 21, 2024, at Ava’s House. 

A memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 6, at St. Mary of Mercy Catholic Church in Alexandria. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service on Friday, April 5, at Will Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Oldham Cemetery, Oldham.

Delores was born on Aug. 12, 1943, the second of six daughters, to Ernest and Callista (Winker) Nelson in Ramona. She grew up in Oldham, where she graduated from Oldham High School in 1961, as part of the last graduating class.

Delores was united in marriage to Darnell “Doc” Peterson on Nov. 25, 1967 in Oldham at St. Catherine Catholic Church. Doc and Delores moved their family to Alexandria in 1969, where they made their home for 55 years and raised their children. Delores worked various jobs, including babysitting and working at Jarding’s Market, before going to work at Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell where she worked as an admitting clerk on the night shift for nearly 20 years. She retired in 2009 and took care of her husband until his passing a year later.

Delores enjoyed reading books and doing word searches. She was a Minnesota Twins fan, watched NFL games and enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s extracurricular activities.

Delores is survived by her two sons, Rick Peterson of Sioux Falls and Jim Peterson of Alexandria; daughter, Lynette (Kevin) Kingsbury of Letcher; 10 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rosie (Charlie) Warner of Sioux Falls and Karen (Fred) Walters of Council Bluff, Iowa; three brothers-in-law, Rollo (Sharon) Peterson of Sioux Falls, Alden (Faye) Peterson of Minnesota, and Dale (Connie) Peterson of Sioux Falls; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; granddaughter, Tanna Kingsbury; sisters, Cel (Bob) Halter, Shirley Nelson and Mary (Bob) Hitzemann; sister-in-law, Harriet (John) Bresee; nephews, Tom Walters and Bryan Halter; and a niece, Shelli Eberle.
