WWSSC lost a heartbreaker Friday night as Mt. Vernon scored in the final seconds to tie, then finished with a game ending two point conversion to make the final score 12-14.
The Mustangs were the first to strike, scoring on their opening 71-yard drive to take a 6-0 lead.
The Blackhawks quickly responded with a 73-yard scoring drive. A failed two-point conversion tied up the score at 6.
Both defenses prevented any further points until halfway through the second quarter when WWSSC partially blocked a punt to take over possession on Mt. Vernon’s 38-yard line.
The Blackhawks struggled through penalties and a fumble to work their way to the 14-yard line on a third down and 12 to go. Todd Stekl then hit Trevor Easton, who took the ball into the end zone. The score remained at 12-6 following a failed two-point conversion.
The Blackhawks defense held Mt. Vernon scoreless the rest of the night until the final play, but the offense was also unable to add points to the board.
WWSSC rushed for 99 yards. Stekl was 6-of-12 passing for 187 yards. Tyler Krueger carried the ball 11 times for 68 yards.
Jacob Fouberg led the Hawks defense with 12 tackles. Austin Messmer had 11.
Deric Denning was 5-for-9 for 122 yards through the air for the Mustangs. They had a total of 131 passing yards. Cote Hinker rushed 11 times for 53 yards. Hinker also led the MV defense with 12 tackles.
The Mustangs improved to 1-2, while the Blackhawks  went to 0-3.
The Hawks will host Highmore/Harrold this Friday at Woonsocket for homecoming.
