Angie McCain, Director of Surgical and Maternal Care Units at Avera Queen of Peace Hospital in Mitchell has been awarded the Spirit of Service award by the South Dakota Healthcare Human Resources Association.
The Spirit of Service award recognizes an employee who has performed above and beyond the call of duty and has shown extraordinary acts of kindness in the community and/or for patients, visitors or fellow employees. The employee demonstrates a “Spirit of Service” through the qualities of kindness, respect, loyalty, dedication and hospitality.
Bonny Culhane, SDHHRA President and Human Resources Officer at Avera Queen of Peace in Mitchell presented the award to McCain.
McCain has worked at Avera Queen of Peace for 35 years. She was nominated by CEO, Tom Clark, after he received a letter from one of her associates, Tammy Howard, who wanted him to know the support and compassion shown to her by Angie while she was receiving cancer treatments.
A portion of Tammy’s letter reads: “Angie’s given me a shoulder to cry on, she’s been to doctor appointments with me and has been there for chemo and radiation treatments. She was there when I had surgeries and calls to check on me. I’m a Vikings fan so she put together a Vikings party for me to get together with my co-workers while I was on medical leave, and she arranged for me to look at Christmas lights when I was feeling horrible from treatments. She wouldn’t take no for an answer and I’m glad I went because it was what I needed. Angie is not only my boss but has become my friend.”
