Rachelle Moore, Sanborn Central senior, hosted a seventh/eighth grade girls basketball tournament Saturday, Jan. 19 as part of her Senior Project. Over $2,700 were raised and all the funds were directly donated to the Cure Kids Cancer organization, which is out of Sanford Children’s Hospital.
There was a meal available consisting of a barbecue, homemade beans, chips and a bar or a cookie, which was sold for $5 per plate. The First Lutheran Church Ladies volunteered to serve the meal and made the bars that were the dessert.
A bake sale was also held throughout the day, with more than four tables full of goods that were donated by community members. Some of the items were homemade pies, breads, cakes, brownies, cookies, rolls and countless types of bars.  The concession stand was also open, selling candy bars, pop, water and PowerAde.
There were many people that volunteered to make the event run smoothly, such as referees, scorekeepers and the people that ran the bake sale, concession stand and the meal.
Tip-off of the first game between Sanborn Central/Woonsocket and Wessington Springs began at 10 a.m., followed by Ethan facing off against Mt. Vernon/Plankinton. Mt. Vernon/Plankinton defeated Wessington Springs in the third place game and Ethan was able to take home the championship by defeating SC/W in the last game of the day.
Admission for the games was free-will donation.
