This year South Dakota State University is celebrating 50 years of Women’s Athletics. On Friday, Nov. 13, they hosted a luncheon honoring 50 outstanding women athletes that are SDSU graduates.
Elaine Zell of Brandon, daughter of Lloyd and Audrey Kempf of Woonsocket, was one of those honored.
Zell, a 1978 Woonsocket graduate and a 1982 graduate of SDSU, set several track and field records during her years in college and also received All-American recognition. In 1981, she was chosen as the College Female Athlete of the Year.
One of the highlights of her SDSU career was during the Dan Lennon Track Meet in Vermillion. She was entered in five events, winning all of them and setting records in all of them.
The 50 women were also introduced during halftime of the women’s basketball game.
