On the shoulders of multi-sport sensation Myah Selland, the Sanborn Central/Woonsocket Lady Blackhawks rode into the State “B” Volleyball Tournament for the first time ever.
The Lady Blackhawks beat Arlington 3-1 for the Region 3B Championship last Tuesday night at Sanborn Central. This is the third time in a row SCW has battled Arlington for a trip to the tournament.
Set scores were 20-25, 25-14, 25-22 and 26-24.
After giving one away in the first set, the Blackhawk girls recalibrated their course and pounded out an easy second set 11-point win.
The Cardinals fought back in the third set, but it wasn’t quite enough for the two-time Region champs, as the Hawks pulled out a three-point win.
With visions of State in their sites, and behind a phenomenal burst from Selland, the Blackhawks rode their adrenaline to a 15-point lead. But the Lady Cards weren’t ready to give up.
The Hawks’ elation turned to nervous fear and then determination, as the realization set in that this match wasn’t over yet. Arlington battled back out of a giant deficit to get within a point of the home team.
Behind a Hawaiian-themed screaming crowd, the Hawks fought back to finish out the set, and the match, and plan their trip to Sioux Falls.
Selland recorded a big night, even for her standards, with 31 kills and five blocks.
Bailey Moody racked up 36 assists and 15 digs, while Tayla Weber added up 11 kills. McKenzy Peterson had 23 digs and two aces and Maddie Vermeulen, 26 digs.
Arlington ended their season 23-9, while SCW improved to 18-10 to move on to the State Tournament.
