Shelby Selland, a 2014 Sanborn Central graduate, is beginning to make an impact for her Augustana Vikings women’s basketball team as a red-shirt freshman this season.
Selland spent her first season at Augie redshirting in order to rehab a shoulder injury and feels that was a good decision. Selland says the year off helped her get stronger and learn the system at her new school.
In her second year as a Viking, Selland earned a starter position just four games into the season.
Her coach, Dave Krauth, says the decision was made mostly for what she was able to provide defensively, but that he really likes how she is developing offensively. At 6-foot-2, Krauth says she gives the team the extra length and protection inside that was needed.
Selland has started in 22 of 26 contests this season and is averaging 6.2 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. She is shooting 43 percent from the floor and 31 percent from beyond the arc.
The Lady Vikings are in third place in the South Division of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with a 14-6 conference record and a 20-6 record overall.
