Blackhawks topple Mt.Vernon/Plankinton in Friday game

The Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central Blackhawks improved to 2-1 on the season with a 27-6 victory over Mt. Vernon/Plankinton on Friday at Mt. Vernon.
The Blackhawks got started right away. After forcing a punt, the Blackhawks scored on their third offensive play as John Witte ran 36 yards for a touchdown. Witte kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead.
Early in the second quarter, MVP scored, but the extra point was no good, and the score was 7-6. The score stayed that way for the rest of the first half.
Late in the third quarter, Trent Kingsbury scored for the Blackhawks on a 25-yard run. Witte’s extra point kick was good and the score was 14-6 after three quarters. On an ensuing drive by MVP, Witte forced a fumble and made the recovery. The Blackhawks drove down to the one-yard line to end the third quarter.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Kingsbury scored again on a run. The extra point was no good, and the score was 20-6. The Blackhawk defense was able to hold MVP and get the ball back and put together another nice drive, which was capped off by a five-yard touchdown run by Kingsbury. Witte kicked the extra point and that made the final 27-6.
John Witte had 112 yards on the ground on 19 carries. Trent Kingsbury had 86 yards on 13 carries and scored three touchdowns. Defensively, Witte and Kingsbury led the way with seven tackles apiece. Witte also had an interception. Aiden Wormstadt and Landon Wolter each had an interception, as well.
The Blackhawks have a bye this week. Next action will be on Sept. 15 when the Blackhawks host Redfield/Doland in Wessington Springs for homecoming.
