The Wessington Springs/Woonsocket/Wolsey-Wessington wrestling team won first place in the wrestling tournament in Gettysburg on Saturday. All 14 wrestlers placed in their individual weight class, including six champions.

On Saturday, Jan. 16, the WSWWW wrestling team traveled to Gettysburg for a 12-team tournament, and they came home with first place as a team with 204.5 points. They earned 121.5 points more than second-place finisher Webster Area. All 14 wrestlers from the WSWWW team placed, and the team had six individual champions, including Tyler Eddy of Woonsocket at 182 pounds. Tyson Eddy had a third-place finish in the 138-pound weight class.

The team also hosted a triangular on Thursday, Jan. 14 in Wessington Springs. Howard was supposed to be part of the event to make it a quadrangular, but they stayed home due to inclement weather. The team performed well at home, again, too. They beat the team from Warner/Northwestern with a score of 64-6, but they lost to a very tough team from Kimball/White Lake with a final score of 14-59.

As a team, WSWWW has only suffered two losses so far this season. Their success just continues to build with each event they compete in. Their next competition is this Saturday, Jan. 23, when they travel to Parkston to compete in the Parkston Tournament starting at 10 a.m.

Myah Selland, of rural Letcher, scored her 1,000th college career point in South Dakota State University’s 62-50 win over Omaha last Friday. She met the 1,000-point mark in the second quarter of the game, where she finished with 20 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Earlier in the week, Selland had earned the Summit League Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the fourth time this season for her performances against Western Illinois. In those games, she averaged 22.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 4.5 assists in SDSU’s two wins over Western Illinois. In their second game against the Leathernecks, Selland set a career high with 29 points, and she also had 11 rebounds, six assists and four steals.

After missing most of last season due to a foot injury, Selland has come back strong and is playing as good as ever. The Sanborn Central graduate is having an outstanding season that could prove to be her most successful year yet.

Sanborn County has hired Craig Bennett to take over the position of Sanborn County Veterans Service Officer. Bennett is currently the Davison County Veterans Services Officer, and he will remain in that position as well.

With 22 years of military service in the United States Navy, Bennett is very familiar with services that veterans may need and are entitled to for serving the country. One of those benefits deals with veterans’ health benefits and their care in their community. There is a home-based primary care provider who is employed through Veterans Affairs who will do home visits for eligible veterans.

Bennett also works with veterans and their compensation and pension benefits. The compensation side of things deals with service-connected issues, such as things that occurred during a veteran’s active duty. One such issue is what is now known as a Blue-Water Vietnam vet benefit. Any veteran who served within 12 miles of Vietnam could be eligible for the agent orange benefits now.

Bennett also works with the pension program that is available for war-time veterans, their spouses, or widows/widowers. He also helps with burial benefits. He orders the markers for the burial site, and he helps with financial burial benefits if the veteran is eligible.

An important service that Bennett provides through his office is a transportation service for any veteran who needs a ride to the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls. He only asks for at least a three-day notice, and the veteran has to get their own ride to and from Mitchell.
