Woonsocket students hit all the notes at annual concert

On Thursday, May 5, the Woonsocket K-12 Spring Concert was held in the Woonsocket School gymnasium under the direction of Band Director Russell Garry and Music Instructor Jenny Easton.

The evening kicked off with the fifth-grade band playing two pieces, March Militaire by Franz Schubert and Starsplitter Fanfare by Brian Balmages. The sixth and seventh grade band followed with two pieces, Sword of Destiny and El Conquistador, both written by Tim Smith. The eighth – 12th grade band wrapped up the instrumental portion of the evening performing three pieces, Highlights from the Greatest Showman, arranged by Michael Brown, and Baba Yetu and Disney Film Favorites, both arranged by Johnnie Vinson.

The high school vocal portion of the evening began with the seventh – 12th grade men’s choir performing the New Zealand folk song, Wellerman. The song earned the group a superior rating at the spring music contest in March. The full seventh – 12th grade choir sang next with two pieces, Hallelujah from the movie Shrek, arranged by Roger Emerson, and Be a Light, arranged by Tim Hayden. The seventh – 12th grade women’s choir followed, performing Cups from the movie Pitch Perfect by A.P. Carter. Performing this piece also earned the women’s choir a superior rating at the spring music contest held earlier in the year.

The elementary vocal students were divided into two choir groups, the preschool through second grade choir and the third through sixth grade choir. The third through sixth grade choir performed two pieces, Forward, by Teresa Jennings, and Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World, arranged by Roger Emerson. When the students sang Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World, they also performed the song with American Sign Language. For the final performance of the evening, the preschool through second grade choir also sang two songs, the traditional Down by the Bay and the Jamaican Work Song, The Banana Boat Song.
