The District 6 American Legion Auxiliary president Theresa Maeschen from Mitchell held a group meeting at the Letcher Community Center Saturday morning at 10 a.m., Nov. 3. Discussion was held about the National convention that was held in June, and a group workshop in Sioux Falls that Theresa had attended in October. Auxiliary members from Woonsocket, Mt. Vernon, Mitchell and Letcher attended. Letcher unit furnished breakfast. Letcher Auxiliary President Sandi Ruml presented President Maeschen a patriotic scarf as a thank you gift. It was a very informative and fun meeting.
Sunday evening, the Letcher American Legion Auxiliary hosted a potluck supper for area veterans and their families at the Letcher Community Center. Apparently 45 people were in attendance and a great meal was provided. Auxiliary President Sandi Ruml gave a reading on the history of the armistice between Germany and Russia being signed at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month with the end of WW1 in 1918, 100 years ago this Veterans Day. Guest speaker Karen Klinkner of Artesian did a slide presentation on her military career and being picked for the very first Women’s Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in September.
Tom Johnson sang “God Bless the USA,” and Joyce Swagger played all hymns of each branch of the military. The veterans stood to be honored as the crowd sang.
The program was closed with everyone singing “God Bless America.”
