ELDEEN STEKL

Mitchell

Eldeen Stekl, 90, of Mitchell, died peacefully Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls after a brief illness.

Funeral services were Monday, April 14, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mitchell. Burial was in Butler Cemetery in rural Letcher. Visitation was Sunday, April 13, at Bittner Funeral Chapel.

Eldeen Faye Stekl was born in rural Storla on the family farm on March 29, 1935, to Leonard and Edna (Bibler) Anderson. She graduated from Letcher High School.

Eldeen married Duane Stekl on June 8, 1952, at Storla. After several years of working on the farm and raising children, Eldeen pursued a career in healthcare and worked as a registered nurse for many years at the hospital in Mitchell.

Eldeen loved spending time with her family, attending ballgames, golfing, enjoying an occasional glass of wine, playing cards and traveling with friends, going to the Moose, and just laughing and enjoying life to the fullest.

She is survived by her four children, Lynette (Hans) Reime of Hoquiam, Wash., Coly (Robert) Blake of Wessington, Wes (Sherri) Stekl of Letcher, and Allen “Tig” (Joan) Stekl of Lennox; sisters, Corrine Larson and Thelma Tastad, both of Mitchell; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Duane Stekl; infant daughter, Connie; brother, Archie (Kathleen) Anderson; sister, Elaine (Lowell) Kane; and brothers-in-law, Lavern Larson and Ervin Tastad.

On Sunday, April 13, Sanborn Central Elementary (PreK-5) students and staff enjoyed the first annual Family Prom in the Sanborn Central gym. Families were encouraged to dress in their Hawaiian clothes to go with the theme “Under the Sea.” Along with lots of dancing, students had a hula hoop contest and limbo contest. A prize for the best dressed family went to the Ashley and Dustin Pollard family. They received a gift card for the Muddy Cup. Family Prom was a fundraiser coordinated by the Sanborn Central Elementary staff as a fun follow up to the high school prom. Proceeds from the event will be used towards new playground equipment at Sanborn Central!

On Friday, April 11, the Woonsocket Kindergarten class hosted a special event, a 3D Shape Museum for the second graders.

To create their museum exhibits, each kindergartener went on a 3D shape hunt at home to find real-life objects to represent different shapes. They brought their 3D shapes to school and displayed them at the museum in the Kindergarten classroom.

To visit the museum, the second-grade class received tickets for entry. The second graders explored the exhibits that the kindergarteners had produced, took notes and drew examples of the 3D shapes they observed. The kindergarteners’ museum was timely, as the second-grade class was in the midst of studying geometry. The project allowed both the kindergarteners and second graders to discuss the subject, encourage connections, and make learning geometry more relatable.
