Huron

Jack Frank Hyde, 91, of Huron, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 2015, at the Violet Tschetter Memorial Home.
His funeral was Tuesday, Nov. 10, at First Untied Methodist Church in Huron with Rev. Mark Holland officiating. Burial was at Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Huron Veterans Council. Visitation with a 7 p.m. prayer service was Monday, Nov. 9 at the Kuhler Funeral Home.
Jack Hyde was born on July 28, 1924, to Rhoda (Weber) and C. Frank Hyde at Onida. He graduated from Onida High School in 1942. In 1943, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served his country during World War II. He was wounded by a sniper near Cebu in the Philippine Islands. Jack was honorably discharged from the Army in December 1945 and was awarded the Purple Heart and the bronze star for his military service.
On Dec. 30, 1947, Jack married Carolyn Grace of Woonsocket at the Grace family farm. They lived in Huron where Jack worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a foot carrier and a rural mail carrier for 34 years.
Carolyn and Jack spent 17 winters in Arizona, moving back to Huron full time in 2003. He was a 60-plus-year member of First United Methodist Church and sang in the choir for over 50 years. He also sang with the Silvertones and in several barbershop groups in both Huron and Arizona. In addition, Jack was a member of the Huron Noon Lions Club, VFW, American Legion, DAV, AARP, NARFE and the Huron Area Senior Center. He enjoyed bowling, playing golf, playing cards, working crossword and jigsaw puzzles, working in his garden and reading.
Grateful for having shared in his life are his children, Peggy (Dale) Gibson of Huron, Jacalyn (Stephen) Wolferman of Paramus, N.J., Connie (Gainard) Mattke of Omaha, Neb., and Bradley Hyde of Kearney, Neb.; 14 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Owen (Virginia) Hyde of Murrieta, Calif., and Kent (Betty) Hyde of Little Rock, Ark.; three sisters-in-law, Mavis Grace of Huron, Ardis Grace of Blair, Neb., and Pat Hyde of Milwaukee, Wis.; one sister and brother-in-law, Ernest (Ila) Grace of Chandler, Ariz.; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents and parents-in-law; his twin brother, James; a sister at birth; his brother, Neil Weber Hyde during World War II; his wife, Carolyn in 2009; his brother, Mark Hyde; one sister, Jean Hyde Eckstrom; three brothers-in-law, Bill Eckstrom, Leslie I. Grace, Jr., and Ernan Grace; and one daughter-in-law, Jean (Hutchinson) Hyde.
Memorials may be directed to the Huron Area Senior Center, First United Methodist Church or the Heartland United Way.
