Leonard Oakley, age 88, of Madison, formerly of Woonsocket, died Friday, Jan. 8, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Society in Howard.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Jan. 12 at Beach United Methodist Church in Howard with Rev. Conrad Krahling officiating. Visitation was Monday evening, Jan. 11 at Ellsworth Funeral Home in Madison and one hour prior to services at the church. Burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Wessington Springs. Military honors were at the church prior to procession to the cemetery. Arrangements are with Willoughby Funeral Home in Howard. Online condolences can be sent at www.willoughbyfh.com.
Leonard was born Jan. 1, 1928, in Miller, the son of Dunbar and Mabel (Kammerdiner) Oakley. He graduated from St. Lawrence High School and served in the US Army during the Korean War. He married Patricia Anderson on Feb. 19, 1956, at Gann Valley. They farmed in the Miller area until they moved to a farm near Woonsocket and later to a farm near Letcher. They moved to Madison in 2003. In May 2006, Patricia died and he remained in Madison.
Leonard was a member of the VFW and American Legion. He enjoyed dancing in his later years with his special friend, Violet Milkey, and playing cards at the nursing home.
He is survived by one daughter, Beth (Gary) Klingbile of Madison; one sister, Alyce Mae (Gene) Ellingson of Forestburg; two grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; four sisters-in-law, Virginia Kelsey of Wessington, Norma Moser of Miller, Glenda Oakley of Huron and Maylou Oakley of Miller; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife; an infant son, Darwin; three brothers, Gordon, Dale and Richard “Dick”; and two sisters-in-law, Deveda Oakley and Marje Oakley.
