Leonard F. Vetter, 75, of Woonsocket and Sioux Falls, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016 at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the Basham Funeral Home, Woonsocket. Rev. Garry Swagger of Letcher officiated. Burial was in St. Wilfrid Cemetery, Woonsocket with military rites by the American Legion Post 29. Visitation was held at the funeral home on Tuesday evening, Sept. 6, from 7-9 p.m. with family present.
Leonard Francis Vetter was born Jan. 12, 1941, in Mitchell to Alex and Rose (Preachar) Vetter. They settled on the family farm, south of Woonsocket, where he worked with his father. Leonard attended elementary school at St. Joseph Catholic School and Woonsocket High School, graduating with the class of 1960.
He was a member of the South Dakota Army National Guard from 1959 until 1980 when he retired at the rank of SFC E-7.
He married Beatrice Twombley on June 27, 1964 at St. Wilfrid Catholic Church in Woonsocket. They settled on the family farm working with his father, Alex.
Leonard enjoyed pheasant hunting in younger years, watching baseball, Nascar and rodeos. He especially enjoyed time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, which were the highlight of his life.
He was a member of the Woonsocket American Legion Post 29 and was a past commander. Other than farming, he worked at Dakota Pork, Thermaset Plastics and Mitchell Mfg.
He is survived by his daughters, Sandra (Gary) Willman of Woonsocket and Lynn (Shawn) Beehler of Sioux Falls; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Lawrence Twombley of El Cajon, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Beatrice in 2005; his sister, Rosemary Anderson; and nephew, Mark Anderson.
