Irene Amick, 97, of Letcher, died Friday, May 26, 2017, at Prairie View Healthcare Community in Woonsocket.
Funeral services were Tuesday, May 30, at Letcher Community Church in Letcher with burial in Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron. Visitation with a 7 p.m. prayer service was Monday, May 29, from 5-8 p.m., at Will Funeral Chapel in Mitchell.
Anna Irene Haddorff was born to Carl and Clara (Johnson) Haddorff in Irene, on March 11, 1920. The family lived on various farms and settled in Wessington Springs, where Irene graduated from high school in 1938.
Irene married Vernon Amick on June 11, 1939, in Wessington Springs, and they moved to a farm near Letcher in 1941, where she and Vernon farmed and raised their family. Irene was a member of the Letcher Community Church, Women’s Fellowship, the Civic Study Club and Birthday Club. She was also a member of the Sweet Adelines for many years. Vernon passed away in 1988 and Irene continued to live in the home they had built near Letcher. She moved to Mitchell in 2009, and then resided at the Prairie View Healthcare Community in Woonsocket.
Irene enjoyed life to the fullest, with a song, poem and a smile always ready to share. She loved her family and the life she and Vernon had built. Even in her last days, she was singing and reciting poetry to her visitors.
Irene is survived by her daughter, Audrea (Mark) Klassen of Wayne, Neb.; sons, David Amick of Blaine, Minn., Dennis (Lynette) Amick of Wessington Springs, Chuck (Jane) Amick, Perry (Carol) Amick and Clay (Carla) Amick, all of Letcher; 23 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and 13 great -great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vernon; daughter, Wanda Wilhelms; son, Bruce; brothers, Leonard, Richard and Wendell Haddorff; sisters, Gladys Merriman and Ruth Shoff; granddaughter, Darci Amick; great-granddaughter, Olivia Crymble; and great-grandson, John McClure.
