Robert Sonne, 78, of rural Letcher, died Sunday afternoon, Sept. 16, 2012 in the Prairie View Care Center, Woonsocket.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday Sept. 19 in Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Letcher, with Pastor Mindy Ehrke officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military rites. A prayer service was held Tuesday evening in Basham Funeral Home.
Robert “Bob” Sonne was born on March 5, 1934 to George and Hannah (Nelson) Sonne. He was born on the farm in Elliot Township where he lived all his life. He graduated from Letcher High School in 1952.
He married Norma Birger on Nov. 23, 1956 at the First Lutheran Church in Mitchell.
He was drafted into the Army in 1957. He had basic in Fort Ord, Calif. and was then stationed at Ft. Lewis, Wash. He received an Honorary Discharge in 1958. He then came back to farm.
While in the Army he received the Marksman Award. He was an excellent shot and that carried through in his love to hunt. Many good times were had with friends, his sons and grandsons. He also loved to restore old cars.
He attended Trinity Lutheran Church his whole life. He served many years on the township board, as trustee in his church and on the cemetery board. He was a family man and adored his kids, grandkids and great-grandkids.
He is survived by his wife, Norma of Woonsocket; four children, Greg and his wife, Char, of Mt. Vernon, Gail DeKramer and her husband, Lincoln, of Canistota, Brian and his wife, Tami, of Mt. Vernon, and Jeff and his wife, Jennifer, of Mitchell; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Lennis and his wife, Wilma, of Mitchell.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Gordon; a sister, Edel Duncan; a nephew, Steve Sonne; a niece, Paula O’Donnell; and brothers-in-law, Mike Duncan, Bill Kieser, Paul O’Donnell and David Watters.
