Agnes (Barta) Kurtenbach, 78, Rapid City, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013 at Rapid City in the Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Mass of Christian Burial was on Tuesday, August 20 in St. Therese Catholic Church at Rapid City with Father Bill Zandri as Celebrant. Burial followed in Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
Agnes was born on Jan. 24, 1935 at Forestburg to John and Grace (Rogers) Barta and graduated from Artesian High School.
On April 24, 1957 she married Jim Kurtenbach, Sr. at Artesian. They lived at Mitchell where their three children were born, Jim (Luke) Jr., Raymond John and Mark.
In 1972 they moved to Iowa and then to Nebraska in 1974. In 1976 they settled in Rapid City, where she cleaned motel rooms so that she could be home with her boys after school. She loved her boys very much and was proud of them.
In 1984 she went to work at Rapid City Regional Hospital in the housekeeping department. She started working at Black Hills Regional Eye Institute in 1986 and worked there for over 15 years. They terminated housekeeping in October 2001 and she began working for Dr. Wright, Cris Matthews and Dr. Slingsby. They were like a second family to her and she always said she would be ever grateful for them taking her in, such wonderful people and a great place to work.
Agnes was a member of St. Therese Church and Women of the Moose.
She is survived by a son, Jim (Luke) and wife Patty of Rapid City; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Raymond John in 1963 and Mark in 1997; husband, Jim Sr. in 1986 due to a construction accident; and a brother, Richard.
