Leona M. Eagle, 95, of Wessington Springs died Friday afternoon at Prairie View Care Center in Woonsocket.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 20 at the United Church of Christ in Wessington Springs with Rev. Sara Olson Dean officiating. Burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery. An Eastern Star Service will be held at Basham Funeral Home.
Leona Madge Deskins was born on Dec. 7, 1917 to Andrew and Lois (Crist) Deskins on a farm in Crow Township, Jerauld County. She spent her young days playing outdoors and riding her horse “Bess” one and three fourths miles to school. She attended elementary school at Nelson School and high school at Wessington Springs High School. She continued her education at Wessington Springs Junior College and took a teaching course. She grew up attending Anina Congregational Church.
Leona was married to Theodore (Ted) William Eagle on June 15, 1940 at the Templeton Church. They farmed in Harmony Township and Leona did substitute teaching. To this union four children were born, two sons and two daughters. They later moved to Dale Township and continued to farm and milk many dairy cows, until moving into Wessington Springs in 2005. After Ted moved to Prairie View Care Center in Woonsocket, Leona lived with her daughter, Bonnie Feistner and her family. Leona moved to Prairie View Care Center in 2010.
Leona was a family woman. She loved being a mother and grandmother. She was so proud of all of her children and grandchildren. She loved flowers and gardening – maintaining large flower and vegetable gardens. She helped her husband with the farming and milking. She loved to sew and was a proficient seamstress. She made many, many beautiful quilts including quilts for each of her grandchildren for graduation day.
Leona was a member of Wessington Springs United Church of Christ, UCC Women’s Circle, Springs Garden Club, Eastern Star and Dale Social Club. She was a 4-H leader for 25 years and the 4-H Extension for 40 years.
Leona is survived by her children, James (Pat) Eagle of Wessington Springs, Bonnie (Merlin) Feistner of rural Woonsocket, Deanna (Daniel) Runyan of Rapid City and Gary (Mary) Eagle of Rapid City; 14 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted; her parents; her sister, Lavon; and her grandsons, Todd and Jace.
