Gary W. Bessey, 65, of Sioux Falls and formerly of Wessington Springs, died Friday, Sept. 20, 2013 in the emergency room in Avera McKennan Hospital at Sioux Falls.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 24 in the United Methodist Church at Wessington Springs with the Rev. Martin Avery officiating. Burial was in Prospect Hill Cemetery at Wessington Springs.
Gary Wayne Bessey was born on April 21, 1948 in the Esther De Jong Maternity Home at Wessington Springs to Wolina (Weaver) and Lloyd Bessey.
He married Deanna Meyer in May of 1970. He later married Sherrill Drees Valland in December of 1996.
He was a vet assistant, trucker, hired hand and farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Sherrill; daughter, Amy (Kip) Schultz of Sioux Falls; son, Zane of Huron; step-sons, Shon (Sabine) Valland of Bonney Lake, Wash., Erik (Jen) Valland and Ryan Valland of Sioux Falls; sister, Della (Leon) Amdahl of Woonsocket; three grandchildren; two step-granddaughters; six step-grandsons; and a brother-in-law Steve (Sheila) Drees, Wall.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Wolina Bessey; infant sister, Audrey; and his mother and father-in-law, Virginia and Jerry Drees.
