Joyce Elaine (Satter) Lauer, 91, of Sioux Falls, died peacefully Sunday, July 17, 2016,
A memorial service was held on Saturday, July 23, at the Halladay – Peterson Chapel at Dow Rummel Village with interment at Woodlawn Cemetery. A Celebration of Life reception followed at the Minnehaha Country Club.
Joyce was born on Sept. 19, 1924, at the Satter family farm home to Clarence A. Satter and Cecelia (Moore) Satter of Artesian.
While attending grade and high school in Artesian, Joyce participated in declamation, played basketball and was the high school reporter for the Artesian Commonwealth. She was valedictorian of her class and attended the University of South Dakota, where she earned her bachelor’s and Master of Arts degrees and was a member of the Alpha Lamba Delta Sorority.
She taught for more than 50 years in Dell Rapids, Hartford, Brandon, Edison Junior High, Washington High and Lincoln High. She also taught summer school for many years as well as English adult education classes.
Joyce was active in civic organizations and church, and was president of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary sorority for teachers. She was head of the English department for many years at Lincoln High School and was inducted into the Lincoln High School Hall of Fame in 2003.
She became active with many mahjong groups and attained Life Master in Duplicate Bridge.
Joyce is survived by her three sons, Craig (Mary) of Salt Lake City, Utah, Kent (Gina) of Reno, Nev., and Jay (Pat) of Parker, Colo.; four grandchildren; two sisters, Lucille Brisbane of Beaverton, Ore., and Marcia Wicks of Lompoc, Calif.; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
