Katherine Ogle, 90, of Harrold, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017, at Avera St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre.
Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 9, at the Harrold Auditorium with interment at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Harrold. A prayer service with Rosary was Sunday evening, Jan. 8, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Highmore.
Katherine Elizabeth was born Jan. 17, 1926, to James and Eugenia (Hollerich) Schmitgen. She grew up on their family farm northwest of Harrold, where she attended country school with her two sisters.
On Feb. 9, 1948, Katherine married Lowell Ogle and to this union seven boys were born. They lived with Fred Ogle on a farm that he purchased northeast of Harrold until 1972, when Fred moved to Pierre. Katherine continued to farm after the loss of her husband in 1967, and remained on the family farm until her death. Lowell’s niece, Lisa Casady, came to live with Katherine in 1982, and she treated her like a daughter.
Katherine worked on the farm all her life, and there was not a job she couldn’t do. She loved her animals more than anything, including dogs and cats, pot-bellied pigs, exotic chickens and ducks, and her miniature horses. She had a green thumb, having many houseplants, numerous flowerbeds and a large garden. She loved to decorate her yard for holidays. Katherine was an amazing cook and enjoyed cooking for the crews during harvest and at the sale barn in Highmore, where she made many life-long friends.
She liked to travel on cruises and bus tours, enjoyed bowling, and loved attending her grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s activities.
Katherine was a member of the VFW, St. John’s Catholic Church, the Harrold Birthday Club, The Ballroom Swishers and the Red Hat Society.
She is survived by her sons, Clarence Ogle of Rapid City, Larry (Deb) Ogle of Woonsocket, Dave (Judy) Ogle of Harrold, Dean Ogle of Augusta, Kan., Mike Ogle of Harrold, and Gary (Kristy) Ogle of Spokane, Wash.; niece, Lisa Casady (Judge) Jessop of Presho; sisters, Margaret Pope and Mary DeRouchey; sisters-in-law, Lucille Ebert and Avis Pardun; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and one great great-grandchild.
Katherine was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell; parents, James and Eugenia Schmitgen; father-in-law, Fred Ogle; son, James Ogle; and daughter-in-law, Lorna Ogle.
