Leo Joseph Grunewaldt, 97, of Faulkton, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017, at the Faulkton Area Medical Center.
Funeral Mass was Saturday, Jan. 7., at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Faulkton. Visitation was Friday, Jan. 6, at 7 p.m., also at the church.
Leo Grunewaldt was born April 18, 1919, in Woonsocket, to August and Minnie (Zapp) Grunewaldt. He graduated from Faulkton High School.
He was united in marriage to Mary Brown on April 9, 1944.
Leo was a lifelong farmer and rancher who enjoyed Hereford cattle, John Deere tractors and a good corn crop. He was an active member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Orient, serving many years on the Parish Council and as an usher.
He is survived by his wife, Mary of Faulkton; brother, Lawrence of Faulkton; children, Kathy Sarutzki of Sioux Falls, David (Doris) Grunewaldt of Ashton, Michael (Nancy) Grunewaldt of Miranda, Lorraine (Michael) Fernandes of San Ramon, Calif., and Lois (Tim) Tankersley of Gordon, Neb.; seven grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Leo was preceded in death by his son, James; and son-in-law, Bob Sarutski.
Luce Funeral Home of Faulkton was entrusted with the arrangements.
